Brienno is a municipality in the Province of Como located in the Italian region of Lombardy. It's a small pretty village which has ancient narrow cobbled streets that wind between the old buildings and is situated approximately 15km from Como,The village lies on the western side of Lake Como and benefits from some lovely lakeside walks.
The houses in the village are very picturesque and many have balconies. Tradition has it that the war memorial of a man throwing stones is to commemorate a battle in Libya in 1910 when a battalion ran out of ammunition and used stones instead. The town has a number of historic landmarks to visit including the part of the town still enclosed by ancient Roman walls,The Church of SS Nazario e Celso which has Romanesque origins, although the Church was rebuilt in the sixteenth century and The Church of S. Vittore with its Romanesque bell tower and mullioned windows and the nave dating back to the fifth century A little further along the main lake road takes you to Argegno, which is a really pretty fishing village. Ferry services are available from here, which access the whole of the lake. | |
